Continuing the flurry of added regulation on industry, the EPA has expectedly lowered the standard for ground-level ozone. What this means is, counties that do not meet the new standard stand a good chance of being placed under economic sanctions, a designation called non-attainment. At a time when transportation system funding is talked about regularly, one of the penalties of a non-attainment designation is the withholding of federal highway dollars for new construction. Also, as the linked column points out, more expensive gasoline formulations are required in the penalized areas. Curiously, since the late 1990’s, the EPA has tightened the standard each time it has had the opportunity, dismissing the “science” it cited and defended just a few years ago. Read more here.
